When I see the waves on the horizon. We know it's in the ocean. It's on its way a thousand miles away. The largest surf area in the Half Moon Bay area attracts surfers from all over the world.
Just off the coast, a short distance from the port of Pillar Point, Mavericks looms on the horizon during the winter months (November to March), when storm surges push waves toward some of the biggest waves in the world. These are waves that can reach 60 feet, water towers that challenge even the most experienced cyclists. Mavericks is a surf spot in Northern California, just outside Pillar Point Harbor, just north of the town of Half Moon Bay, in the town of Princeton-by-the-Sea. After a severe winter storm in the northern Pacific Ocean, waves can usually reach peaks of more than 25 feet (8 m) and peak at more than 60 feet (18 m).
The rupture is due to an unusually shaped underwater rock formation. A monster is hiding near the coast of Northern California. Known as Mavericks, this surf area located 6 km north of the center of Half Moon Bay generates some of the biggest waves in the world and attracts big wave surfers who live for them. But what makes these waves so big? QUEST talks to surfers and scientists who are discovering deep water and to big-wave surfers willing to risk their lives to enjoy an adventure like no other. Hang out on the outdoor patio at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company and Sam's Chowder House, even when the weather isn't nice, to enjoy the saltwater-scented air.
