How do disabled people go to the beach?

Beach wheelchairs are equipped with large, wide wheels that can roll across sand without sinking. They usually require that users be accompanied by someone to push them, although several places in California offer motorized chairs that can be self-propelled. BeachAbility is a charity that provides manual, balloon-shaped wheelchairs specially designed for use on the beach and other rugged terrain. All state beaches with pavilions are equipped with ramps that allow access from the parking area to the pavilion and to the beach.

To help navigate to the water, some places also offer wheelchairs, walkers, and accessible beach mats designed to help people with limited abilities access the beach. All are available free of charge and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. See the lists below and get in touch with the location you are interested in visiting. Beach customers with physical disabilities who wear a disability badge on their vehicles will be able to park next to the east side of established traffic lanes.

Vehicles with a disability identification are admitted to the beach free of charge. Parking east of the established traffic lane is allowed only when conditions permit.
