Get to know this 2.7-mile round-trip trail near Half Moon Bay, California. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 58 minutes to complete. The coastal trail is approximately 11.5 miles away when done in its entirety from start to finish. You can start at either end, to the north along the Dardanelles Trail on Cypress Avenue, in Moss Beach, or to the south on the Cowell Ranch trail, south of Miramontes Point Road, in Half Moon Bay.
There is currently no trail that crosses Princeton Harbor, but you can walk along the roads and sidewalks. The Visit Half Moon Bay website is a cooperative effort of the Half Moon Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau, the Half Moon Bay Hotel Business Improvement District, and the Half Moon Bay Downtown Association. After Miramar Beach, you'll cross green coastal cliffs overlooking the four picturesque beaches that make up Half Moon Bay State Beach. Stretching 7.5 miles, it extends along Half Moon Bay State Beach and a little further from Pillar Point Harbor in El Granada to Half Moon Bay Golf Links.
I arrived at the Half Moon Bay airport, although I went off the path to get there and be able to take some photos of the planes. For the next 2.7 miles, the trail passes through wildlife and bird habitat in the Wavecrest open space before reaching its southern endpoint, on the Half Moon Bay golf course. The California Coastal Trail (CCT), which is still in progress, is a state project that, once completed, will cover 1,200 miles of California's coastline. Now called the California Coastal Trail, it has extended through the golf courses of Half Moon Bay and is now nearly 9 miles and average.
The Half Moon Bay shoreline has done a great job of covering most of the expanse along this part of the San Mateo County coastline. Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival, Half Moon Bay Wine & Jazz Festival, Pacific Coast Dream Machines, 4th of July parade in the manner of Make it Main Street Nights of Lights, live music. Visitors to the Half Moon Bay coastal path, which runs along a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean, will sit in the front row to watch the waves hit the beach, the whales migrating offshore or a moving sunset at the end of the day. The coastline encompasses the cities of Half Moon Bay, Miramar, Montara, Moss Beach, El Granada, San Gregorio, La Honda and Pescadero.
Half Moon Bay State Beach offers parking, picnics, fishing and camping, and visitors are encouraged to arrive early on weekends.
