The Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails in the area. This trail, which runs through the beautiful Pacific Ocean, offers fascinating views of ocean.
There are several things you can experience when you walk this 2-mile (3.2 kilometer) paved trail. Birdwatchers have the chance to see some unique bird species, and the trail also offers easy access to many beautiful beaches along the coast. It's a perfect trail for both beginners and professional hikers. An exciting trail that runs along the north end of Wavecrest, this path is easy to complete.
Although Wavecrest Open Space receives a significant amount of visitors each year, it's still a private and unique trail to walk. This 2.4-kilometer (1.5-mile) hiking trail, which offers a wonderful place to stretch your legs, also allows you to observe beautiful birds and a quiet beach to relax on. You can even go out on the trail with your dogs, but they should always be on a leash. Pines is an exciting trail in the heart of the Montara mountain area.
This track gets its peculiar name from the only two trees along its route. Although one of the trees no longer exists, it's still called 2 Pines. 2 Pines, one of the most open trails in the area, offers stunning views of the picturesque landscape and beautiful ocean nearby. The outdoor trail that crosses nature has several points where you can stop and enjoy the views.
Where can you enjoy a breathtaking 180-degree view of the ocean in the city? Simple answer: head straight to the start of the Montara mountain trail. This trail, which runs along the top of the monumental mountain of Montara, is interesting and moderately difficult to overcome. Although it has some steep spots along its length, it also has a lot of vast areas, making it an ideal place for a beginner. Half Moon Bay is located about 30 miles south of San Francisco, on the Northern California coast, making it a relatively short 45-minute drive from the city.
This is Pillar Point Bluff, one of the most popular excursions in Half Moon Bay. The forests are cool and dark, and the towering redwoods provide pleasant relief from the sun's heat during the summer months. Coastal sequoias are the tallest trees in the world, but most of them are “second-growth” sequoias, meaning they're only around 100 years old (the average age of maturity is 500 to 1000 years). Even so, walking among centuries-old trees it's still quite magical.
It's an easy 3.9-mile circuit that takes you through pastures, along the meandering stream, and through a shady eucalyptus and oak forest. The understory is a carpet of nettles, poison oaks, and other native plants. The 4-mile circuit takes you through dense eucalyptus forest, open meadows, grassy slopes and coastal ridges, with spectacular views of Pillar Point Harbor, the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve is located on the western slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains, overlooking Half Moon Bay.
The centerpiece of this 5,412 acre reserve is Purisima Creek Canyon, with its towering redwood trees, flowing streams and an undergrowth of ferns, berries and wildflowers. From the northern part of the reserve you can see magnificent views of the coast and Half Moon Bay. Redwood was used to make roof tiles in the construction of San Francisco after the Gold Rush, and as wood for the development of Half Moon Bay, including the construction of a canal on Montara Mountain. South of Half Moon Bay, this 7-mile trail offers stunning ocean views, wildflowers, and lots of fresh air.
If you're a birding enthusiast, you'll definitely want to add the Wavecrest Open Space Trail to your Half Moon Bay tour list. What makes the Cowell-Purísima Coastal Trail truly unique and one of the best hiking trails in Half Moon Bay is the abundance of wildlife. If you're feeling adventurous or thirsty, you can have your favorite drink at the Mullins Bar & Grill, at the entrance of the Half Moon Bay Links Course.
It's perfect for a longer walk around Half Moon Bay, as it meanders along the shoreline and offers plenty of opportunities to stop and smell the roses (or, in this case, the wildflowers). Most of them are intermediate to strenuous, but you can also find a couple of easy trails if you don't feel like a difficult hike through Half Moon Bay. The Half Moon Bay shoreline has done a great job of covering most of the expanse along this part of the coast of San Mateo County. You'll almost certainly see some riders here, as it's one of the only beaches that allow horses in Half Moon Bay.
Just because it's hot and sunny in San Francisco or on the Peninsula doesn't mean it's going to be the same on the coast of Half Moon Bay. Depending on where you're from, you might want to pack your bags for the weekend and spend a few days hiking in Half Moon Bay. Half Moon Bay is a beautiful backdrop for individuals or couples looking to escape the hustle and bustle of suburban life.
